Training on Intellectual Property (IP) Foundation Course and Patent Search

The Research, Development and Extension Unit of BISU – Clarin in coordination with BISU IP-TBM office conducted a two-day Training on Intellectual Property (IP) Foundation and Patent Search last April 21-22, 2022, Thursday and Friday at 8:00 am -5:00 pm held at Panda Tea Garden Suites, Tagbilaran City, Bohol.

The activity started with an opening prayer and singing of hymns through multi-media presentation played by Mr. Ariel Christian C. Viodor, chairperson of E&T of CTAS. Prior to this, was the registration of the participants who are the faculty of BISU-Clarin Campus. This was facilitated by the committee assigned headed by Mrs. Jemma Lucitte A. Cabrillos. IATF health protocols were strictly observed all
throughout the activity. The participants were warmly welcomed by the Director of Research Development and Extension, Dr. Ramil S. Bulilan. He also stated the rationale of the two-day training. The speakers for the two-day training were introduced by Mrs. Margie V. Avenido, Chairperson of Research and Development. The resource persons were Dr. Angeline D. Baldapan IP-TBM Project Leader ITSO Director, Ms. Alissa Mae Busano, Science Research Analyst IP-TBM and Ms. Kathlyn L. Quion, IP-TBM Project Support Staff and R&D Chair of BISU – Bilar Campus.

The morning session was productive and the participants were very attentive as the first resource speaker in the person of Dr. Angeline D. Baldapan did her first talk about the Overview of IP System. Ms. Alissa Mae Busano shed light to the minds of the participants about Patent, the Patentable and the Non-Patentable inventions. More so, she talked about Introduction to Patent Search. Open forum followed immediately after the engaging activity between the participants and speakers. Some of the queries were all about the amount of money spent, the processes, and the like. Sumptuous lunch commenced at exactly 12:00 noon.

To ignite the interest of the participants and to reenergize them, a mini zumba moves was done facilitated by Ms. Cyra Luna M. Basilan. After which, Ms. Kathlyn L. Quion delivered her talk about Trademarks, Copyright and other IP’s, and International Patent Classification. The first day ended with minds full of valuable inputs gained from the speakers.

On the second day, morning session was all about workshop by group or by field of specialization. The workshop was all about patent search. In the afternoon, the researchers presented their innovations and proposed innovations. The panel of experts gave constructive criticisms, valuable suggestions and comments to the presenters. There were eight (8) groups who successfully presented and defended
their innovations. These innovations were represented by the following faculty researchers: Mr. Daryl B. Valdez with his innovation Computer-Aided Identification of Edible/Inedible Crabs using Convolutional Neural Network; Mrs. Blandina M. Ombajin with her study Bitter Goud Crackers; Mr. Rey Anthony Godmalin with his study A Method Using Neural Network for Detecting Cacao Condition; Mrs. Jessica D. Astillo with her study Guso Ice Cream; Ms. Alme B. Maravillas with her study entitled Neural Network Model Approach for Bivalve Classification; Ms. Riza A. Beltran with her study entitled Eucheuma Cottoni Enhanced Kangkong Cookies; Mrs. Jemma Lucitte A. Cabrillos with her study entitled Snapping Shrimp Flat Bread; and Mrs. Margie V. Avenido with her study entitled Bamboo Sheath Culm Pot for
Mangrove Plants.

Afterwards, Dr. Roxanne P. Altea, Campus Director gave a message that inspired and encouraged the faculty members to go miles and beyond to do research, make innovations and patents. Dr. Marichu C. Libres, Dean of CTAS, expressed her sincerest impression for the two-day training. Furthermore, Certificates of Appreciation and Training Completion to the Resource Persons & Participants were handed by Dr. Roxanne P. Altea, Dr. Ramil S. Bulilan, Mrs. Margie V. Avenido and Miss Dearyl Mae C. Batan.

The closing remarks was delivered by Dr. Sheila Mae N. Bojos, Dean of CTE. The activity was hosted by Miss Menchie A. Labrigas on the first day and Mrs. Melissa L. Loquere on the second day.

The two-day activity ended with a photo opportunity bearing smiles on their faces. The participants went back home at exactly 5:00 in the afternoon.
